WHY I WROTE.......I LOVE MY BODY

All though my childhood I grew up with non disabled children. There was no one else like me in my gang. When I went to Grammar School (High School) things changed and I was picked on called names and physically Bullied. This didn't do too much for esteem as an Adolescent. I was very shy with young women and even when I found a relationship with a non disabled woman I had my doubts. In a visual way it meant that I never wore shorts as it would show the leg brace, if I was sitting down and a potential girlfriend came up to me I would dread the moment I had to stand up. I met some disabled people but they seemed to be saying thank you and god bless you all the time and I didn't want to do that. This continued until my early 30's when I started to come in contact with disabled people who said fuck you instead of bless you and fuck off instead of thank you. I'd always been political and when the penny dropped it was so easy to see how I had been oppressed. As one person said to me at that time I better had love my body its keeping me fucking alive!

I used to say I had a good leg and a bad leg (guess which was which). When I accepted myself I could accept my body and I could love it. After all it is the only one we get. A lot of disabled people I know live their lives wishing to be someone else some one they are not. I am gratefull to the disabled people who got me into the movement.....otherwise I could have been a wannabee.
